To begin with, we must correct ourselves. Noche is a feminine noun. Therefore, it is correctly referred to as "la noche" not "el noche." Our apologies for the mis-gendering!
So we've been busy in Spain!
For the past two weeks, we've been working on a play titled "Bernarda's Backstage," a staging of Lorca's famous pre-Spanish Civil War play "La Casa de Bernarda Alba." This version, however, uses puppets of varying scales to tell the story with very little text, shadow work and live/pre-recorded projections. So cool! Our former professor at Brown, Kym Moore, set us up with the director, Alejandra Prieto (a former student of hers) before we went abroad. It has been amazing to jump right into the Spanish theatre scene. We've already met some truly fantastic people and our Spanish is getting better by the day. Stags is Sound Designing this staging of the show (and writing original music!), Lee is Assistant Producing/PAing and Michael is Assistant Directing. See the preview video at the end of the post, compiled after the last staging of the show.
We've been exploring in the old streets of Spain, to the Parque de Atracciones (Madrid's amusement park), sampled the best churros in the city, walked around the beautiful Retiro Park, seen a play called "The Imagery of Cervantes" (the author of Don Quixote) and had AMAZING tapas. Oh yeah, and we found an apartment in SIX DAYS! YES!
This past Saturday night was a city-wide-street-party-festival-celebration-performance-multi-media-event-spectacle called "La Noche en Blanco" - The Night in White. It was spectacular by the very definition of the word. The entire city shut down and the streets were packed to the brim with people. There were tubs of bubbles, live concerts, dance floors, instrumentalists, giant tire-swings, 16 person see-saws and so much more. The size of the event alone was awe-inspiring. Truly magical!
Oona tomorrow! Slideshow below! More to come!
Adios!
Michael, Stags and Lee
